Chapter 1 ?The Fat Girl?s Guide to Life? by Wendy Shanker
?Fat.?
If you ever want to make people visibly uncomfortable, just say the f-word out loud.
You can refer to yourself as fat (?Hi, I?am fat!?) or acknowledge that someone else is fat (?She is pretty, but she sure is fat!?), but either way, you?re pretty much guaranteed to freak someone out.
?Fat? is the word I use to describe my physical stature. I use it without apology. The more I use it, the more comfortable I feel with it, and the less power it has to hurt me when someone else uses it as an insult. When I describe myself to someone else, I like to say I?m fat, but it usually scares the hell out of ?em. I don?t know what they picture-maybe one of those people Richard Simmons has to suck out of a house with a forklift. By now I?ve said the word so many times that it really dosen?t bother me anymore. I don?t mind the word; it?s the associations I can do without. What?s the worst thing someone can say to me? ?You?re fat?? No duh, I just told you that.
