"Sickness will always take the mind where minds don't usually go.
Come on the amazing journey, and learn all you should know."
--The Who
I've always liked that quote because my mind has been on some really amazing journeys and learned much along the way!
Of course there is life after diagnosis. You take your meds and if your quality of life is still bad, tell your pdoc and let him/her know that the meds aren't working. Then you take more meds and hope for a life. This disorder does more than mess with your moods, it steals life and one's sense of self.
It's taken me 11 years to really get a quality of life back and it's better than ever now. You can't go back to your old life as though nothing has ever happened to you. You have to move forward, one slow step at a time until bipolar is only one small part of your life. Do NOT let the disorder overtake you or define you.
You can have a life that includes the occasional discomfort and inconvenience of bipolar without being defined by it. It starts with you. How do you define yourself? I define myself as an intelligent, compassionate person who just happens to have bipolar--NOT as a bipolar who happens to be intelligent.
Try writing down all of the things that make up you, and see where the bipolar lands on that list. I bet it's a real eye opener.
Always be yourself.
